The internet world is all based in keywords. I know everybody says “Content is King”, but it is not actually 100% true because “KEYWORDS are King”.
When you do a Google search, you don’t put an image or an article or number in the search field but you put keywords, and based on these keywords Google gives you the results that you need. To get the best result from Google your keywords need to be relevant, but sometimes being relevant is difficult.
What I want to say with “being relevant is difficult” is that sometimes a word, or even two words together have many meanings. For example, someone is searching on Google for Hilton Hotel in Paris, and instead of getting results for Hilton Hotels in Paris, they get results for Paris Hilton – the blond. Now Google’s algorithm thinks that this result is relevant but we all know that it is not, just the algorithm can’t tell the difference.
The MetaWeb Concept
MetaWeb allows people to create a unique ID for a very specific keyword/name/topic, which they call an “entity” . They describe the entity as having a barcode for every topic on the web.
“The MetaWeb” was a concept that Danny Hilli created in 2003 in his company Applied Minds. Today MetaWeb is owned by Google ( since July 16, 2010 ), and they bought it for approx $99.9 million in cash and stock. After the purchase, they changed the domain from Metaweb.com to Freebase.com.

Future Online Advertising Domination?
I think that the Metaweb concept could dominate online advertising in the future. Well, most of us know that the main profits of Google are coming from online advertising right? Yes. So what will happen if one day in Google you can do an “entity” search? The uniqueness of the entity will make the content extremely targeted.
If you ever used Google Adwords you know that you can target broad keywords, exact keywords or phrases in your advertising campaigns, imagine if you can also target entities…how specific that will be?
And why would Google spend so much money on a company, if they didn’t think that the software had such huge potential?
What’s your opinion?
