Bloggers around the world UNITE! There are now approximately 200 million blogs on the world wide web, and blogging has only really taken off in the past 2-3 years.
And as being a blogger becomes a popular hobby, or as an add-on for a business, or even a full-time online business, more demand is being created to service this new market. Bloggers tend to be hungry for education and community, as they are always finding ways to make their blogs better, gain more followers, and engage with fellow bloggers to share ideas, successes and failures.
From this has sprouted new types of websites, especially for bloggers called “Blog Communities” and “Blog Directories”. There are many popping up everywhere.
Here are a few Blogging Communities and Directories for those SERIOUS about blogging (in no particular order):
1. http://www.blogcatalog.com
BlogCatalog is a blogger only social network and blog directory. The site’s purpose is to help bloggers connect, share ideas, and grow through group and general discussions. It also provides a variety of tools, features, and widgets to help bloggers.
2. http://technorati.com
Technorati has been around for quite a while, and is an Internet search engine for searching blogs. By 2009, Technorati was indexing 133 million blogs and over 250 million pieces of tagged social media. This community leans a lot towards “technology” blogs, but it probably is a good idea to get into the Blog Directory.
3. http://www.bloggapedia.com
Bloggapedia has been around since 2006, and has some basic rules before you can submit your blog – like it must have been going for at least 3 months, and you need a minimum amount of blogs on there. I’m guessing this is to stop spammers. They consider themselves a human-edited directory of blogs, with an extensive blog directory, bloggers forum, news resource, and blog toolbox.
4. http://www.mybloglog.com
Most people know My Blog Log, since it is owned by Yahoo. MyBlogLog is a social network for the blogger community that is based on interactions from a popular web widget that members can install on their blog. Bloggers can initiate a blog community for one or more blogs they author. You can also access stats, and tools.
5. http://www.blogged.com
Blogged is a place where you can get reactions to major news events. With Blogged, you can interact with news like never before. Start sharing interesting news clippings and events with your trusted network of friends and like-minded individuals.
6. http://www.blogtoplist.com
This is a blog directory that is sorted by the score each blog has received during the week. 100 unique visitors will generate 1 unique vote. To get a vote the blog author needs to put 2 buttons on their blog and then the visitor needs to click on the button to vote for the blog. Interesting idea for a blog directory…
7. http://www.blogsearchengine.com
This is the Blog Search Engine, indexing the blogosphere. We’re using Google Custom Search as a partner here, with special focus on high quality blogs.
8. http://www.scribnia.com
Scribnia is the source for people’s opinions about bloggers, columnists, reporters, and other writers whose work is available online. We hope it can be a place for truly great writers to be discovered. We rank writers not on traffic or incoming links, but on the feedback and opinions of readers like you.
9. http://www.bloggeries.com
This is more of a Directory than a community, but you can submit your site, and also rate other bloggers blogs. You are also able to build a poll.
10. http://www.myblogguest.com
Community of Guest Bloggers. It unites bloggers who are interested in connecting to other bloggers, journalists and other content creators in any niche and publish their high-quality articles on their blogs.

11. http://www.blogengage.com
Popular community for socialising bloggers, and you have to be “approved” by the site to be allowed to submit your blog. There has been some debate on the web whether it’s a little harsh, but I think it’s good for keeping the spammers away.
12. http://www.blogburst.com
Blog Burst is more of a Directory that brings high-quality, topical blogs together with high-traffic web sites. With BlogBurst, bloggers gain visibility, audience reach and traffic through placement on major online publishers and media destinations in real time. Great idea…
13. http://www.mmosocialnetwork.com
MMO social network has the “dream” of making a good network of people who are interested in Making Money Online, and give them the ability to communicate through their website. They allow our members to submit content on related topics to Making Money Online and make friendship with other helpful people/ bloggers.
14. http://bloggers.com
Community to meet other bloggers, where you can appreciate and inspire Bloggers by voting and positive comments. You can sign in with Twitter, and also add your blog to the Directory.
Do you have a favourite? Do you dislike one of these? Is there another good community/ directory for bloggers? Feel free to submit your comments below.

Thank you for this list of blog directories which makes it easier for us bloggers to submit our content. Since there are tons of directories it can get pretty confusing on which ones to sign up. I have signed up for two of them and will definitely look into the other 12.

Although it seems I am so busy blogging and writing articles and … well, it just seems like there’s no time left to connect with other bloggers, LOL. I am managing it for #blog30, but just barely!

Okay, this might sound dumb but what are the advantages of belonging to a directory? Is there a return on your investment?
Twitter: fionamceachran
June 16, 2010 at 11:07 pm | Permalink
@Sheila Atwood, Hi Sheila, Thanks for your excellent question. The main advantage of being listed in a blog directory, is the external link it provides back to your site. This can help with your blog’s SEO ranking. Also the more popular the directory, the better reputation of the link. I hope that helps

I like bloggeries and blogengage. Brian @ blogengage has been very helpful on more than one occasion.
Earlier today I joined fuelmyblog.com. My initial impression isn’t very good. The blogs in my niche are all very outdated and one blog link redirected me to a German gambling site.

Hi Fiona, There’s a new blogging community that I joined recently that is ground breaking called Bloggerluv.com
Bloggerluv is a DoFollow blog community which is pretty rare these days. It’s one you should check out soon and share with your readers.
BlogEngage, MMOSocialNetwork and MyBlogGuest are really worthwhile also. I belong to some of the others, but these are my picks.
Thanks for the list.

@Ileane, Hi Ileane, Thanks for your comment. Yes, I know about Bloggerluv, and it was part of my original list, but I decided not to include it. I find it a little too visually overwhelming (ie the site has so many different things on it, and different colours, and an annoying floating widget).
I think the concept is excellent, and the content is quite good, but they should do something to give the website a cleaner look with simple colours and visuals.
But I appreciate you mentioning it, because it made me think about why I didn’t put it in the list.

Yes, there is almost an art to getting people to visit and make a comment, and this very idea inspired my latest blog
I did enjoy reading your blog though, it made me think, and I believe in some circumstances, text-to-audio really is a great idea. But I have a bad habit of finding the “free” version of things people normally pay for.

What is the most comprehensive blog directory on the Internet?…
Yes, there doesn’t seem to be a main one anymore. Technorati used to be one of the main ones, but I haven’t been there for over a year. I’m spending more time in blog communities like Blog Engage or Biz Sugar. I wrote an article about this last year…
